Don has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia University in Montreal, and a Bachelor of Education from Ottawa University. Don has spent 29 years with the OCDSB. During that time, Don worked at numerous schools that were often culturally and economically diverse. Don has upheld positions as a teacher, and Vice Principal. Don worked as a consultant at the board office during his last seven years. Don pursued a variety of additional roles including Parent Council, a coach of various sports teams, and led numerous committees.

Don’s time with the board coincided with a dramatic shift in ‘thinking’ and practice. Education was moving from paper and pen reporting and day to day work to electronic and email. Interested in technology, Don became the Tech contact at his school. Don sought out additional training and eventually became one of the first Google Educator/Trainer for the board. Don often provided in-school training to various school staff.

Don’s early tech training at the school level ultimately led him to one role at the board which was critically linked to technology. Don had a variety of portfolios, and roles during his combined 10 years at the board office level. Don’s most notable role was as the SEA portfolio for the Ottawa Carleton District School Board. There he worked with and coordinated a diversified group of technology educators. Other responsibilities included reporting to senior administration, completing and submitting Ministry documents, interpreting new Ministry requirements and advising the board when changes would be required in order to comply with the new requirements. Don also led the Regional Provincial Group of Educators in similar roles.

While at the board, Don was instrumental in moving the current paper system towards online and computer-based options. Don assisted in moving forward from a total paper-based application and file management system to a paperless process. This involved cooperating with several departments within the board and moving towards a common goal. The key to achieving goals such as these was to develop trusting relationships with the various departments. Don’s leadership, experience and ability enabled him to create these meaningful relationships.
